I just got a royalty report from CD Baby for the 4th quarter. It is obvious that someone has recorded 3 of my songs and have paid Harry Fox Licensing to get legal permission to record them, and this of course allows me to get paid.
The 3 songs are:
Dakota (36 payments)
Keep it To Yourself (27 payments)
Highway 58 (3 payments)
The money is very small because the person who "creates" the music is at the bottom of the Totem Pole when it comes to getting paid. It's just that way in the music business, why do you think Spotify has such big cushy offices and a bunch of high paid employees? The only way you can make some real money is to have a high profile artist record one of your songs. I always hold out hope for this, given the number of songs I have written. But it is encouraging to see that other artist are "onto me."
I will have the top downloads for July tomorrow probably.
Thanks for all your support, this entire deal is a grassroots effort. I have no management or agent and do not tour. People just find my music. All very cool.
They pay Harry Fox Agency for the rights to record my songs. Then the money makes its way to me through CD Baby who distributes my music and collects these royalties for me.
Things rolling at Spotify for Human Project Music.
